Ikea has recalled thousands of its dishware after getting hundreds of reports for breakage around the world. Based on the report, almost 160,000 pieces of wares, including plates, mugs and bowls, were listed in the recall notice from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Reason for the Ikea recall
Possible burn hazards was cited as the main reason for the Ikea recall that was first announced last week. Fox Business reported that the Swedish furniture retail giant’s Heroisk and Talrika branded plates, mugs and bowls can become brittle and eventually break, causing hot food or liquid to seep through and leak. As a result, it could burn the person holding it when it breaks.
The CPSC stated that Ikea voluntarily recalled the wares after it became aware of at least 123 reports of breakage coming from various countries. There were at least four incidents where an individual was injured and two of them required medical attention. The commission mentioned in its notice that "Most of the injuries were burns due to hot contents leaking out."
It was learned that the affected pieces of dishware were made from PLA (polylactic acid or polylactide) material that was from renewable sources. While this could be eco-friendly, the reports of breakage show that the material used is now suitable for hot meals and beverages.
Ikea to issue refunds to customers
Apparently, the Ikea dishware can break any time and can potentially cause minor burns. Thus, the company’s spokesperson said this is the reason why they have announced a recall as a precautionary measure.
Both Ikea and the CPSC are urging the public to return the affected colored plates, mugs and bowls that were sold online from August 2019 to May 2021. The store will be giving out full refunds and the customers will not be asked to present any receipt as well. Denver7 News mentioned that 148,000 pieces of the dishware were sold nationwide in the U.S. while 11,000 were sold in Canada.
"We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation," Ikea stated via the recall announcement.
