Hyundai Mobis reportedly filed several patents for its future mobility tech developments. These were filed overseas, so it now has more patent filings in foreign lands than in South Korea.
Hyundai Mobis made the filings last year, and it now has a record of more than 3,000 patents related to electrification, autonomous driving, and Urban Air Mobility or UAM. Over half of these patent applications were made overseas, and this is the first time it filed more than its home ground.
As per Pulse News, the South Korean auto parts maker filed 51% of total patents outside of South Korea. This is said to be a new milestone that was attained under the leadership of its upcoming president and chief executive officer, Cho Sung Hwan. He is leading the company to make these moves as his main focus is improving Hyundai Mobis’ competitiveness by developing global standard patents.
Cho has yet to officially start his term as CEO of Hyundai Mobis. He will work under a two-year term from January 2024. He is the first Korean executive to become the president of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which is the largest standardization organization in the world with 167 members from national standard bodies.
“We have patent experts and attorneys who provide close support for each stage from selecting research projects to verifying reliability. We hope to create continuous value through acquiring promising patents in the future mobility sector,” The Korea Economic Daily quoted an official at Hyundai Mobis as saying in a statement.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis has been working on securing standard patents to protect its technologies that can turn into international standards in the future. Its patent filings are also related to autonomous driving, V2X communications, vehicle charging, and high-precision location tracking systems.
