Huawei missed its initially announced spring release for its flagship P50 series, but the company has finally announced the new devices on Thursday. It was confirmed that phones would have versions powered by Kirin and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, but there will not be any model to offer 5G network connectivity.
Huawei P50 series specs
Huawei P50 will be the company’s first series in years to launch with an SoC that the company did not design. As previously reported, the Huawei P50 Pro will ship with two versions powered by Kirin 9000 and Snapdragon 888. All units of the standard P50 will be equipped with Qualcomm chips. All versions of P50, even the ones with Kirin chips, will have 4G network only. “5G phones are beyond our reach, and we have to go with 4G by removing the 5G module from our chip design,” Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said.
The Huawei P50 series is confirmed to feature powerful camera modules, which is only fitting since the P series has been billed as the company’s photography-focused smartphone lineup. The base model comes with a 50MP True-Chroma camera (f/1.8), 13MP ultra-wide lens (f/2.2), and 12MP telephoto lens (f/3.4) with an optical image stabilizer (OIS).
The Huawei P50 Pro offers an even more impressive camera array and has one more sensor. The device features A 50MP main camera with OIS, 13MP ultra-wide lens, a 64MP telephoto camera that can support up to 200x zoom, and a 40MP camera dedicated for monochrome shots. Both Huawei P50 and P50 Pro have a front-facing 13MP wide lens for selfies that supports 4K video mode.
Huawei P50 comes with a 6.5-inch OLED display with up to a 90Hz refresh rate and 2700 x 1224 pixels. The Pro model has a slightly bigger 6.6-inch OLED screen, but it supports a higher 120Hz refresh rate. The base model is powered by a 4100mAh battery with 66W Huawei SuperCharge, while the Pro version features a 4360mAh battery and additional support for 50W wireless fast charging. The flagship phones are confirmed to ship with HarmonyOS 2.
Huawei P50 release date, price
Huawei P50 Pro with Kirin chips will go on sale first. Pre-orders will be accepted on Friday, while the sale will begin on Aug. 12. Its Snapdragon 888-powered version will arrive by the end of the year. Its price starts at ¥5,988 or around $927 with 8GB + 128GB configuration. A 12GB + 512GB model is also confirmed and will cost ¥7,988 or around $1,236.
The standard Huawei P50 will not arrive in stores until September. Its version with 8GB + 128GB configuration will be priced ¥4,488 or about $694. Initial sales of the P50 phones will be available in China. But Huawei has already featured the series on its global website, suggesting that the devices could launch in other regions at a later time.
