“Homeland” Season 8 is going to be the last season for the spy thriller drama, as confirmed by actress Claire Danes and executive producer Alex Gansa. While there are still a lot of avenues that the show might take, both individuals feel that the show has already run its course.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gansa said that “Homeland” Season 8 will not conclude on U.S. shores but is set to take place in Europe. And seeing how the previous season ended, this is hardly surprising.
“[Season 7 arranges] all the pieces on the chessboard to make that a proper finale for the story we’ve been telling,” Gansa said. “We get to play this last season in D.C with the intention of taking us overseas for one last chapter. [Homeland] Season 8 will be overseas somewhere. We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season 7 and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in 8.”
The executive producer has yet to hint at the plot development for Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) following her capture by the Russian faction. The previous installment saw Mathison descending into bipolar hell and couldn’t even recognize the face of Saul (Mandy Patinkin). While the event was quite the blow for Mathison, it was the complete opposite for the show since it nicely sets up how “Homeland” Season 8 is going end.
Indeed, fans have been widely speculating on how Mathison is going to recover from her madness after the Russians withheld her medication. It’s difficult to imagine how the character can operate in the field in her current state, which is quite depressing given the sacrifice she made. Will she be able to fully recuperate in “Homeland” Season 8?
That’s a possibility, although “complete” is unrealistic at this point. As for the possibility of an extended season, Gansa said it will be up to the network and the stars of the show. Gansa further explained that while he isn’t opposed to an extension, he will not have any hand in it. “Homeland” Season 8 will premiere in June 2019.
