Toshiba to lead 10 other Japanese firms in quantum tech R&D

The council aims to make Japan a world innovation leader in quantum technology.

Toshiba Corp. will lead 10 other Japanese companies in launching a council this summer that would explore the possibility of industrializing quantum technology.

The council will deal with quantum computers, quantum cryptography, other base technologies, and related human resources and rules.

Quantum computers have more advanced computing capabilities than conventional computers, while quantum cryptography theoretically makes wiretapping impossible.

The 11 companies, including Toyota Motor Corp. and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., hope to boost their presence in the research and development of quantum technology, where the US and China are trying to outdo each other.

Toshiba President Satoshi Tsunakawa said the council aims to make Japan a world innovation leader in quantum technology.

Online flea market operator Mercari Inc. has also set up an organization for quantum internet research and development, jointly with the University of Tokyo and Keio University.

Quantum internet involves quantum data exchange that makes communication more secure.

Mercari plans to encourage other companies to join the organization that aims to utilize quantum internet on a trial basis in 15 years.
