In a bid to reduce electronic waste and repurpose the Stadia gaming platform's proprietary controllers, Google has extended its Stadia Controller salvage operation for an additional year. The operation, initially set to conclude in December 2023, will continue until December 31, 2024.
This move comes after the closure of Google's game streaming service, Stadia, which left users with unused controllers that would have otherwise ended up in landfills.
Extended Deadline and Switching Process
Ars Technica reports the deadline extension provides users with more time to convert their Stadia Controllers. Users are required to connect their controllers to a PC using a cable and visit Google's official Stadia website. Users can complete the firmware update process by following the instructions and switching their controllers to Bluetooth mode.
Once in pairing mode, the controller can be connected to devices supporting Bluetooth like any other Bluetooth controller.
Consumer Sentiments on Google's Stadia Extension
Kotaku reports that the Stadia Controller has been well-received for its comfortable design and symmetrical analog sticks. However, it's important to note that permanently switching to Bluetooth mode disables the 3.5mm audio port on the controller. Users should consider this limitation before making the switch.
Google's decision to extend the Stadia Controller salvage operation offers users an extended opportunity to repurpose their controllers and contribute to reducing electronic waste. By converting the controllers to Bluetooth devices, users can continue to enjoy gaming on various platforms while minimizing environmental impact.
So, if you have a Stadia Controller lying around, take advantage of the extended deadline and give it a new lease on life as a wireless gaming controller.
