‘Girl Meets World’ season 3’s episode 20, titled "Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen," is set to follow Riley as she contemplates her future on her birthday. Meanwhile, Disney confirmed the series cancellation prior to the series finale scheduled to air later this month.
The brief synopsis for "Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen" posted on TV Muse reads, “With Riley's (Rowan Blanchard) 16th birthday approaching, the kids contemplate the future and how rapidly their relationships will change in a few short years.”
The penultimate episode will feature Riley as she thinks about her future as well as relationships with family and friends. According to Cartermatt, the episode draws clear parallels with season 2’s “Girl Meets the Bay Window,” where Riley thought about how her transition into high school life would usher in big changes. In season 2’s episode 29, Riley and Maya (Sabrina Carpenter) saw themselves as young adults preparing to move away from home and leaving their favorite bay window behind.
It seems that Riley would have to pause and reflect once more as she moves into a new phase as a sixteen year old. It is quite possible that her mother Topanga’s (Danielle Fishel) imminent job promotion would land the entire Matthews family in London.
Disney Channel recently confirmed that it is ending the coming-of-age television sitcom’s three-season run on the network. According to Business Insider, news of the cancellation was first announced on the series writers’ official Twitter account @GMWWriters. The account tweeted last January 5, “I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes.”
The network confirmed that cancellation with a Tweet that said, “Disney Channel will present the series finale of ‘Girl Meets World’ on Friday, January 20. In the episode, ‘Girl Meets Goodbye,’ the Matthews family contemplates a life-changing decision. We are proud that for over 70 episodes, Michael Jacobs, April Kelly and the talented creative team, cast and crew entertained viewers with an authentic and heartfelt look at navigating adolescence.”
Blanchard also shared on an Instagram post, "I have tried to go in and write this many times in preparation for this moment that I feared might come… I will never be able to put into words my gratitude for Michael Jacobs, the creator of our world, for bring us together—by all, I mean us and you."
She continued, "It is with this cast family I experienced mourning and heartbreak and overjoyment and long days that turned into long nights, each and every moment so painstakingly beautiful."
‘Girl Meets World’ season 3’s episode 20, titled "Girl Meets Sweet Sixteen," is scheduled to air on Disney Channel on January 13, 2017. It will be followed by the series’ final episode titled, "Girl Meets Goodbye," scheduled for January 20.
The show debuted in June 2014 as a spin-off/sequel series of the popular ‘90s sitcom ‘Boy Meets World,’ which starred Ben Savage as main protagonist Cory Matthews, Danielle Fishel as Topanga Lawrence, and Rider Strong as Shawn Hunter.
