‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life’ Updates, Spoilers: Kelly Bishop Talks Emily’s Grief in Reboot; Rory Gets “Special” Ending with Ex-Boyfriend

Alexis Bledel plays Rory on 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life'

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life’ will feature the return of Kelly Bishop as a grieving Emily Gilmore. The actress talked about her character’s return as well as missing co-star Edward Herrmann, who played Emily’s husband and Lorelai’s father in the original series. Herrmann passed away last December 2014 in New York City.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kelly Bishop discussed her character Emily Gilmore’s return in the revival series. In the trailer, Emily is seen making changes in their family home following the loss of Richard including a giant wall-sized portrait of her husband.

The character’s new choice of clothing was one of the most notable parts of the trailer. The wealthy Gilmore matriarch is best known for her concern with decorum and appearances. Bishop commented, “You would never see her like that, and that all gets explained pretty quickly in that scene… They weren’t pretty were they? They weren’t well-fitting jeans.”

Bishop explained that the reboot will feature Emily’s journey through the grieving process. She said, “[Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino] takes Emily on such an interesting journey in the reboot, and sadly it’s probably much more interesting because of the fact that Edward Herrmann’s gone and I didn’t have him.”

She continued, “I missed [Ed] on the set and I missed him as a friend, but in lieu of that, what they wrote for Emily as far as these four chapters go was really interesting stuff and I think really valid, so it gave me some good places to go that I hadn’t been with Emily.”

Meanwhile, Alexis Bledel’s return as Rory will also mean the return of her ex-boyfriends: small town sweetheart Dean (Jared Padalecki), artsy rebel Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), and wealthy reformed playboy Logan (Matt Czuchry). The final season of the original ‘Gilmore Girls’ found Logan proposing to Rory but was turned down. Instead, Rory went off to focus on her career.

Czuchry said that he was happy about how the ending of ‘Gilmore Girls’ turned out. He admitted, “In the original series, I was happy that Rory said no to Logan because I feel like, at that particular time, it wasn’t right for Rory to get married to anybody, and it shows her strength and her independence, which has always been I think a very powerful theme of the show.”

He also revealed that the series’ revival has a “special” ending in store for his and Bledel’s characters. He teased, “In terms of where things are at the end of these four chapters for Logan and Rory, it’s pretty special. I’ll say that… It’s very, very special.”

The revival will feature four 90-minute episodes entitled “Winter”, “Spring”, “Summer”, and “Fall.” Each episode will follow the characters as they go through the seasons. According to Variety, the “Summer” episode is set to feature a Broadway musical starring Tony award winners Sutton Foster and Christian Borle as well as Grammy award-winning composer and singer-songwriter Carole King.

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life’ is a four-part mini-series intended as the continuation to the comedy-drama ‘Gilmore Girls’ that aired from 2000-2007. It is scheduled to air on Netflix on November 25, 2016.
