The “Game of Thrones” franchise will not cease to exist on the small screen as HBO reaffirms its commitment to producing the new series titled “House of the Dragon.” It was also confirmed that the show is slated to premiere sooner than fans expect.
‘Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon’ release date, where to watch
HBO has recently joined the streaming platform war with the launch of HBO Max earlier this year, and what better way to make fans excited about its service than the promise of an all-new series set in the vast universe of “Game of Thrones.”
A jam-packed teaser for HBO Max was released last week with the announcement of “Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon.” In the same video, it was also confirmed that the show is set to premiere sometime in 2022. The release window announcement comes more than a year after it was confirmed that HBO had ordered a full season of “Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon.”
While 2022 may seem a little too far from today, it should still count as good news considering HBO had previously canceled another “Game of Thrones” spin-off project. Given that “House of the Dragon” is a banner title for HBO Max in the coming years, it is highly expected that the new series will be streaming on the platform exclusively in 2022.
‘Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon’ plot, production
As the title suggests, “Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon” will be focusing on the story of Daenerys Targaryen’s family. In a blog post from October 2019, Martin wrote, “It will be centered on House Targaryen, set a couple of centuries before the events of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE and based upon Archmaester Gyldayn’s imaginary history FIRE & BLOOD.”
Martin also confirmed in the same post that the new series is being produced under showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, and HBO also credits them as co-creators of “Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon.” Condal is known for writing screenplay for the show “Colony” and movies “Rampage” and “Hercules” that both starred Dwayne Johnson. Sapochnik, on the other hand, directed several notable “Game of Thrones” episodes, including “Battle of the Bastards” for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award.
