Superhero drinks are the newest items in South Korea’s convenience stores. It was reported that the country’s leading convenience store chain, GS25, is set to launch its own soda series.
GS25 will be releasing its Batman Cola and Superman Cider beverages in its stores across the country. The company said on Monday, April 4, that it will be introducing its superhero sodas in collaboration with the American film production company, Warner Bros.
According to The Korea Herald, the new drinks are coming to GS25 stores soon, and they will be sold for 1,700 won. Both products have the same price and will be out in stores this month.
The release of the new drinks was based on the analysis that stated the younger generation is the major buyer of the most popular soft drinks such as Pepsi and Sprite. Those who are in the 40 and up age bracket prefer Coca-Cola and Chilsung Cider that are currently two of the biggest soda brands in the country.
Still, 60% of the cola drinkers are the younger ones so GS25 decided to launch its own colas - the Batman Cola and Superman Cider - to appeal to both age groups, especially the younger generation.
“Our customer analysis shows that today’s younger generation no longer blindly goes for nationally recognized brand names but attaches greater value to product content,” GS25 explained why it decided to create its own soda brand.
GS25 further said that it still has plans to develop and launch more snacks and drinks featuring favorite characters and other content. These future releases with popular DC Comics characters will also be in partnership with Warner Bros.
“We hope to take private brands to the next level by working together with a global leader in content creation,” GS retail and beverage unit’s managing director, Kwon Min Kyoon, said in a statement. “By continuing to analyze our customer base and differentiating our products, we will keep up with evolving consumer demands.”
Meanwhile, Pokemon bread is all the rage now in South Korea, and this proves that associating products with well-known characters is the perfect way to sell. Korea Joongang Daily noted that people have been lining up in convenience stores across the country just to get their hands on the package of the Pokemon bread that also comes with collectible stickers. Only a few managed to buy as this item always sold out as soon as delivered to the retailers.
