GM Korea saw a remarkable surge in export sales last month. According to industry estimates, GM Korea accounted for an impressive 18.9 percent of the total 225,391 Korea-made vehicles exported in October.
The Korean arm of the US auto giant General Motors' two popular SUV models, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Trax Crossover, contributed significantly to this achievement, with a combined total of 42,623 units, according to Korea Herald.
GM Korea's Strong Performance in Export Sales
GM Korea's sales figures in October revealed a 72.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This notable growth marks the company's 16th consecutive month of monthly sales expansion, demonstrating its sustained success in the market. GM Korea secured the third-largest share of automobile exports, trailing behind Hyundai and Kia, with 46 percent and 31.9 percent. Renault Motors Korea and KG Mobility followed with 1.9 percent and 1.2 percent shares, respectively.
GM Korea's 87.5 percent surge in exports from the same period last year highlights the company's rapid overseas expansion strategy. Leveraging its robust SUV lineup, GM Korea has successfully strengthened its global presence. While other automakers, excluding Hyundai Motor and Kia, experienced sales declines, GM Korea's exponential growth positions them as a key contributor to the Korean automobile export market.
Renault Motor Korea and KG Mobility Struggle Amidst Declining Sales
Korea Times reported Renault Motor Korea witnessed a significant drop in sales, with only 5,745 vehicles sold in October — a 70.2 percent decrease compared to the previous year. Despite this decline, the XM3 small SUV and the mid-sized QM6 SUV emerged as Renault Motor Korea's most sought-after vehicles.
To combat falling sales, the automaker plans to incentivize customers with a special promotional event featuring a super-low interest rate of 0.9 percent on installment payments. Similarly, KG Mobility suffered a sales decline of 51.3 percent, largely influenced by production suspensions and weakening consumer sentiment.
GM Korea's Continued Success and Aspirations
Since February, GM Korea has further expanded its presence in the US market by manufacturing the Trax Crossover compact at its Changwon plant in South Gyeongsang Province. Between January and October, the company exported a total of 337,114 units, securing a substantial 14.8 percent share of Korea's automobile export volume.
During this period, the Chevrolet Trailblazer emerged as the top exported model, with an impressive cumulative export volume of 176,123 units. Notably, the Trax Crossover also ranked fourth, with 137,700 units. Industry experts predict that if this trend continues, the Trailblazer could become the top exported model of the year.
