The culinary-themed anime series is approaching its final story arcs to be covered in “Food Wars” season 5. It is then only appropriate for avid fans to start asking whether or not Soma is ever going to fulfill his ultimate goal of defeating his father, Joichiro, in a shokugeki.

‘Food Wars’ season 5 spoilers: Will Soma fulfill his ultimate goal?

In the very first episode, healthy competition between Soma and Joichiro was established as one of the things that motivate the younger Yukihira. Even when he started going to Totsuki, Soma’s main drive has been defeating his father because, to him, it would serve as a stamp of approval of being deserving to operate the Yukihira Diner. Now, is this storyline getting resolved in “Food Wars” season 5? The unfortunate answer is no.

Many manga readers would agree that the introduction of Asahi was the point where things started to diverge from the ambition that fans have shared with Soma’s character. In the manga, Asahi was introduced during his grim shokugeki against Joichiro. The latter was defeated in a 5-0 decision, and from that point on, avid fans already knew that it is going to have a huge effect on Soma’s ultimate goal.

Manga readers hoped for the story to get back on track and still see Soma defeat Joichiro. However, the final arc concluded with Soma not even facing his father in a formal shokugeki. The only sort of resolution the series offered was when Soma defeated Asahi in the latter rounds of the BLUE competition. This means that if the anime will not have an original ending, “Food Wars” season 5 is ending without providing closure to Soma’s dream of being a better chef than his father.

‘Food Wars’ season 5 release date, episode count: What to expect

The production of “Food Wars” season 5 was announced shortly after the Fourth Plate finale was released in late 2019. It has also been confirmed that the Fifth Plate will premiere sometime in April. With only a few months of hiatus, it appears that the anime series is very unlikely having an original ending. Soma might not defeat Joichiro even in the anime adaptation.

With “Food Wars” season 5 using the remaining source materials from the manga, it also appears that it is going to be the finale anime installment. Considering the chapters left for the anime adaptation, the Fifth Plate could round with around 12 episodes similar to season 4.
