Fans of the action media franchise "Fast and Furious" were dealt a massive heartbreak when Paul Walker, who played series protagonist Brian O'Conner, died during the middle of "Fast and Furious 7's" production back in 2013. But there is a possibility that Brian O'Conner can make a “Fast and Furious 9” comeback.
In an interview with the Associate Press, Paul Walker's brothers Caleb and Cody Walker expressed interest in returning to work with the “Fast and Furious” franchise. Caleb and Cody Walker helped the “Fast and Furious 7” production team wrap up the movie after their brother's death.
While “Fast and Furious 7” was supposed to be the last appearance of Brian O'Conner due to the actor's death, the character was never officially eliminated from the setting, preferring to go into retirement rather than getting killed off to shut out the possibility of making a comeback.
To add to the potential Brian O'Conner comeback, Jordana Brewster, who plays Mia Toretto, Dom Toretto's (Vin Diesel) sister and Brian O'Conner's love interest, has already been announced to make a return in “Fast and Furious 9.” Mia Torreto's return can open up the possibility of Brian O'Conner showing up as himself on-screen once again even just for a small cameo. This could also screen test how good a replacement the Walker brothers can be as the series' original protagonist.
Fans who may be worried that there might not be enough time to make a concrete decision to reintroduce Brian O'Conner can thank the upcoming “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobbs and Shaw.” Featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, the spinoff is scheduled for a mid-2019 release, pushing back the release date for the ninth movie to 2020. This gives the main series a bit more time to look into the possibility of having the Walker brothers reprise Paul Walker's role in “Fast and Furious 9.”
With “Fast and Furious 9” being pushed back from a 2019 release to sometime in 2020, fans can anticipate news about how big a role Brewster's Mia Toretto will be getting for the upcoming main film to get a full confirmation that a Brian O'Conner comeback is possible.
