Elon Musk is under duress to deliver the Starshield satellite network of SpaceX to United States defense personnel stationed in Taiwan, Forbes reported.
Congress Urges Elon Musk to Fulfill SpaceX's Defense Commitments with Starshield in Taiwan
In a letter to Musk that the outlet initially obtained, Wisconsin Republican Representative Mike Gallagher reaffirmed to the industrialist that SpaceX was bound by a contractual obligation to grant the United States Department of Defense access to its satellite communications service.
It is still being determined whether additional members of Congress affixed their signatures to the letter dated February 24, according to Forbes. Nevertheless, according to the source, a "group of US lawmakers" reportedly participated in the demands for Musk to grant US defense forces in Taiwan satellite access. The Wall Street Journal, in its subsequent coverage of the letter, solely acknowledged Gallagher's participation in composing the correspondence.
Gallagher, chairman of the House select committee on the Chinese Communist Party, stated in the letter that the Department of Defense is allocating "tens of millions of dollars" for Starshield. This system transmits imagery to military agencies via satellites in low-Earth orbit and was initially developed for government use.
The Starshield satellites, which are purpose-built for clients in the national security sector, have become indispensable in Ukraine's resistance against invading Russian forces as they deliver internet connectivity to remote areas, regions affected by natural calamities, or conflict zones.
"I understand that SpaceX is possibly withholding broadband internet services in and around Taiwan — possibly in breach of SpaceX's contractual obligations with the US government," Gallagher wrote.
"A robust communication network for US military personnel on and around Taiwan is paramount for safeguarding US interests in the Indo-Pacific region," he added.
As he emphasized the critical nature of safeguarding American personnel in the region, Gallagher foreshadowed possible Chinese aggression against Taiwan in his letter.
Musk wrote in the letter, "American service members in the Western Pacific would be placed in grave danger."
Elon Musk Faces Inquiry on Starshield's Role in Taiwan Amid US Support Against China's Pressure
Forbes reported that Musk was requested to provide a report to the select commission by March 8 regarding Starshield's capabilities in Taiwan. The publication stated that it is "improbable" that Washington legislators would pressure Musk to relocate Starshield to Taiwan. However, the publication emphasized the critical nature of Space X's contracts with the military.
The New York Times reported that Gallagher led a bipartisan delegation of five US legislators on a visit to Taiwan this week to reassure the island nation that the United States would continue to support its security interests despite China's increasing aggression and pressure.v
