Those U.S. taxpayers who asked for an extension for their 2025 federal return have to submit it by October 15, 2026. Eligible taxpayers living outside the nation who got an extension to that date are included, but not those who have already submitted. An extension lets you submit—not pay—more time; taxes were due April 15 and late-payment penalties and interest could be piling on unpaid amounts.
Particularly if Form 1099-DA is missing, crypto filers should review every 2025 sale, trade, spend, and other trash and check cost basis. Confirm acquisition dates, amounts, fees, and values using exchange records, wallet histories, and on-chain data. Confirm that gains are categorized as short- or long-term, account for relevant mining, staking, airdrop, and DeFi income, and ensure your numbers match the data provided on Form 1099-DA.
Missing the deadline might result in interest, penalties for failure-to-file and failure-to-pay, and maybe an IRS substitute return. Before October 15, file your return, check your extension, get tax forms and wallet records, figure profits and losses, and include income events. Pay any outstanding tax as quickly as you can; if required, submit a truthful return by the due date and update it afterwards.
