U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended the federal government's decision not to stop the Patriot Front march in Washington, D.C., saying the white supremacist group's July 4 demonstration was protected under the First Amendment despite its controversial ideology.

Speaking on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Burgum said the masked members of Patriot Front did not violate any laws during their Independence Day march through the nation's capital. While emphasizing that he strongly disagrees with the group's white supremacist and anti-immigrant views, Burgum said the U.S. Constitution protects free speech, even when the message is offensive.

He added that the same constitutional protections apply to demonstrators who protest President Donald Trump on the National Mall, arguing that freedom of expression extends to all viewpoints, regardless of political affiliation.

Patriot Front has openly criticized democracy in its published manifesto, claiming the U.S. political system has failed and calling for a "hard reset" to restore what it describes as the traditions of early European settlers. During Saturday's event, hundreds of members marched alongside drummers near the U.S. Capitol and Union Station before boarding Metro trains to a suburb in the District of Columbia.

Burgum declined to say whether he personally condemned Patriot Front or whether he would advise President Trump to do so. Instead, he described the rally as an isolated event that stood in contrast to the broader celebrations marking the United States' 250th anniversary.

The Interior Secretary also highlighted the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to renovate and beautify Washington, D.C. In a separate interview with ABC's This Week, Burgum said dozens of monuments and fountains have already been repaired as part of the administration's initiative to make the nation's capital "safe and beautiful."

Among the most closely watched projects is the $14.7 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which drew criticism after algae growth, peeling surfaces, and visible deterioration appeared shortly after construction was completed. Burgum repeated President Trump's claim that vandals damaged the pool's new liner by cutting it with box cutters, though no evidence has been publicly presented to support the allegation. He added that the same contractor responsible for the original renovation will complete the repairs, praising the company's work on the project.
