A budget TV manufacturer is making a surprising leap into Europe's EV market with a new cheap electric hatchback set to rival offerings from VW and BYD. Boasting over 300 miles of range and rapid charging, the newcomer aims to disrupt the family car segment.
Cheap TV Maker Enters Europe's EV Market
Launching a new family hatchback EV to compete with the VW ID.3, Cupra Born, and BYD Dolphin, a Chinese manufacturer of affordable TVs sold at Walmart and Amazon, is making waves in the industry. From what we can see, it appears to be authentic.
Skywell, a name more commonly associated with budget electronics. Since the brand is known as Skyworth in Europe and is a prominent electronics brand in China, it's safe to say that it's a relative newbie.
According to Electrek, the Skywell brand has been selling electric vehicles in Israel for a few years, and this year they debuted a midsize SUV in the UK called the BE11. The confusion arises because now we can see both names on the vehicle.
Introducing the Q: Competitively Priced Family EV
The Q, developed by Skywell (or Skyworth), will be "competitively priced" and set to hit European shelves next year. The vehicle is 4.3 meters long, so it won't be very eye-catching. However, it is sleek, contemporary, and firmly positioned in the family car segment.
There will be two battery options; more details are forthcoming, but the bigger pack has a combined range of more than 300 miles, making it an excellent choice for lengthy drives.
DC fast charging should give you a 10% to 80% recharge in 20 minutes. The 204hp front-mounted motor will enable what it claims is a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds – that’s a lot quicker than the BYD Dolphin Comfort, which can do the same in seven seconds.
High-Tech Features and Design Elements
A huge "Skyroof" is available on certain Q variants, and the infotainment system features a 15.6-inch touchscreen display. Additional features include 18-inch alloy wheels. Those in the back seats can enjoy the sound system's eight speakers, wireless internet access, and touchscreen interface that comes standard on this vehicle.
Additionally, it comes with a plethora of other features, including intelligent speed assist, lane keep assist, a panoramic parking camera that can capture the entire vehicle, and autonomous braking systems.
Warranty and Long-Term Benefits
Not to mention the battery is warranted for eight years with 155k miles of use and a seven-year warranty with 100,000 miles of use.
Final Thoughts on the EV's Potential Impact
Taking a glance at the photographs, the Q appears to be a serious contender in the electric vehicle market. However, the real test will reveal how things pan out. It should be noted that BYD first produced mobile phones, whereas Geely (the parent company of Volvo) manufactured components for refrigerators.
