There’s another side of Norman (Freddie Highmore) that we didn’t know about, until Monday night.
TVLine reported that midway to the “Dreams Die Fast” episode, the show revealed that Norman had been living a double life as Norma. Norma is revealed to be a patron of a local dive bar, and even has sex with the bar’s male patrons. The twist was a departure from the original material, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”
Executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse revealed to the entertainment site the reason they chose to go on this route. Ehrin said, “We’ve always been driven by character. It really came from getting inside the head of Mother, who at the end of [last week’s episode] was basically broken up with by her son. Norman says, “This isn’t really working for me” in so many words. She’s devoted everything to this guy and she’s pissed. So she’s like, “F–k this. I’m going to go out and throw back a few.” And, you know, the guy [at the bar] was cute. She’s attracted to him, and they end up in a car… It came from a really human place. Clearly, Norman’s sexuality is all over the place. It’s not super defined. It made sense to us that this would’ve happened with him — many times, probably.”
Meanwhile, an Instagram video of Rihanna watching her debut as Marion Crane in the same episode surfaced, and suffice to say, she was very conscious about her sex scene. Pitchfork said Rihanna’s Marion Crane is the same character who was famously stabbed and murdered in the shower, which was originally portrayed by Janet Leigh.
When come the time of her intimate scene, the singer reacted hilariously, no doubt because she was watching her debut episode with friends.
Cuse said that fans should not expect Rihanna to reenact the shower scene. He said that fans should expect a different Marion Crane in the show. He added, “Rihanna really embraced our idea of redefining the character. That was the moment in which she said I’m all-in.”
