Roger Federer is set to go head-to-head with Switzerland’s number two player Stan Wawrinka in the 2017 Australian Open Semi-Final. Metro UK said that this would be “one hell of a match,” as both are strong in their one-handed background and in great form for the tour.
Federer has been laid off last year due to injury. And to compete against a player who knows his game best, Sydney Morning Herald said Federer needs to conquer his self-doubt first.
"I think now that I'm in the semis, feeling as good as I am, playing as good as I am, that's a huge surprise to me. Like I said on court, if someone would have told me I'd play in the semis against Stan, never would I have called that one for me. For Stan, yes, but not for me. I honestly didn't even know a few days ago that he was in my section of the draw or I'm in his section," Federer shared.
Tennis champ Andy Roddick is confident that not only Federer will have a great tour, but that a match against Rafael Nadal in the Final would be “the most significant match ever.”
Roddick told the Telegraph, “If you think of where they are at in terms of Federer being on 17 Slams and Nadal on 14 Slams, a Nadal win puts him back in the game, back in the conversation, narrowing the gap to 17-15 with the French Open just around the corner.”
Nadal, on the other hand, downplayed Roddick’s enthusiasm and said that at least for now, he will focus on getting ahead of his Semi-Final opponent, No 15 seed Gregor Dimitrov, news.com.au reported.
