Arizona Primaries Set High-Stakes Governor and House Battles Ahead of Midterm Elections

Arizona's Republican primary delivered major victories for candidates backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, setting up closely watched contests for governor and a key U.S. House seat in the November 3 midterm elections.

Republican Congressman Andy Biggs secured the party's nomination for governor after defeating Representative David Schweikert and two other candidates. Biggs, a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, will challenge Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who advanced without opposition. Trump's endorsement played a significant role in Biggs' campaign, with the president celebrating the results as "a complete sweep" on social media.

The governor's race is expected to be one of Arizona's most competitive contests. However, the Cook Political Report recently shifted its rating from a toss-up to "Lean Democratic," citing concerns that Biggs' stance on the 2020 presidential election could prove divisive among swing-state voters. Reports have also highlighted Democratic momentum after Cindy McCain endorsed Hobbs.

In Arizona's 1st Congressional District, former NFL kicker Jay Feely won the Republican nomination, defeating two rivals with Trump's backing. Feely will face Democrat Amish Shah, an emergency room physician who prevailed over former broadcaster Marlene Galán-Woods in a competitive Democratic primary.

The Phoenix-area district is viewed as a critical battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrats are targeting the seat as they seek a net gain of four seats to reclaim the House majority beginning in 2027. Republicans currently hold a narrow advantage with 218 seats, while Democrats control 212, alongside four vacant seats and one independent aligned with Republicans.

Political analysts consider both the 1st Congressional District and the 6th District, represented by Republican Juan Ciscomani, among the state's key toss-up races. Arizona's closely divided electorate, shaped by a large bloc of independent voters, is expected to play a decisive role.

The November elections, held midway through Trump's second presidential term, will determine whether Republicans maintain control of Congress or whether Democrats regain enough seats to challenge the administration's legislative agenda.
