“Alita: Battle Angel 2” is expected to be produced after the movie adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga series of the same title raked in millions at the box office. While there is no official announcement yet for a sequel, a second installment is not far from happening.
Besides the ending of the “Alita: Battle Angel” was open-ended that it seems to have already set up the story for a continuation or a follow-up. James Cameron, the movie’s producer, told Digital Spy that although the debut film was made to be a complete story with a beginning, middle narrative and ending, there is still a lot to explain and explore in Kishiro’s manga where the movie was based on.
Together with director Robert Rodriguez, Cameron further revealed that they have plans for “Alita: Battle Angel 2” but producing it is in hinged on several factors. The pair mentioned the success of the film as an example, and aside from this, they also consider how the viewers received the film.
"Well, we obviously have a plan for that, but it's cheeky to set up a sequel before you're proven. That can blow back in your face,” Cameron and Rodriguez said. “We think of something like Warcraft that was clearly set up with the intention to do sequels, and then it becomes mock-able because the film doesn't succeed.”
"But I don't worry about stuff like that. If the film fails, it's its own punishment, you know? It doesn't matter if we get mocked on top of having failed," the producer added.
With what Cameron and Rodriguez had said, “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is definitely coming to continue the protagonist's story. In fact, Rodriguez relayed that Cameron already sent him about 600 pages of notes for sequel’s script.
“Alita: Battle Angel” that premiered in February was one of the top earners at the international box office after it amassed US$92.5 million in 82 markets, according to IMDB. For its worldwide record, the movie earned US$403 million in all. With a production budget of US$170 million, “Alita” was able to break even and this detail alone is a strong basis for “Alita: Battle Angel 2” to be produced.
