$272M Liquidation Cascade Clears Overleveraged Longs for a Sounder Rebound

Crypto derivatives saw a quick leverage flush during the September 29, 2026 trading session as spot price falls set off cascade liquidations at major futures exchanges. Forced liquidations removed $271.8M in open positions out of a total open interest of $24.6B as Bitcoin retested $83,800 and Ethereum fell back near $2,680. With BTC ($124.5M in long wipes) and ETH ($78.2M in long wipes) showing comparable deleveraging profiles, overleveraged long bets bore the brunt of the shock—accounting for $202.7M (74.6%) of the liquidations. This quick purge reduced continuous funding rates to +0.0085% for BTC and +0.0062% for ETH, therefore eliminating speculative excess and recalibrating account long/short ratios to close-to-neutral levels (1.07 for BTC and 1.10 for ETH).

Deribit's options market placement shows clear structural limits that define the local trading scene. Big institutional put accumulations point to strong support levels at $80,000 for Bitcoin (13,800 put contracts) and $2,500 for Ethereum (118,000 put contracts), therefore giving spot purchasers downside buffers. On the other hand, extensive overhead call writing creates a tight supply limit at $85,000 for BTC (16,900 call contracts) and $2,800 for ETH (132,000 call contracts), so defining a range-bound environment. The market has set a much better derivatives basis for the next sustained directional move by eliminating weak, high-leverage bullish exposure without compromising structural support levels.
