Zcash Mining Profits Surge as Liquidity Risks Grow

Zcash (ZEC) has emerged as one of the most profitable proof-of-work cryptocurrencies to mine, but rising regulatory pressure and shrinking exchange access are creating new risks for miners.

By early September, Grayscale Research estimated that Zcash mining rigs generated roughly twice the daily revenue of comparable Bitcoin machines and about four times more revenue per megawatt-hour. While Bitcoin miners collectively earn around $35 million daily compared with roughly $2 million for Zcash, ZEC currently offers stronger returns per machine and unit of electricity.

The surge follows ZEC's dramatic price rally above $1,000 in September, representing an almost twenty-fold increase from year-earlier levels. Zcash network hashrate has climbed more than 2.5 times in 2026 as miners redirected Equihash hardware toward the network.

However, today's Zcash mining profitability may not last. Mining difficulty typically adjusts more slowly than price, meaning higher hashrate could eventually reduce returns. Equihash miners can switch to cryptocurrencies including Horizen (ZEN) and Komodo (KMD), but those markets offer significantly less liquidity than Zcash.

Regulatory developments pose another challenge. Zcash mining and ownership remain legal in major jurisdictions, but regulated exchanges have increasingly restricted privacy coins. OKX removed ZEC trading pairs in 2024, while Binance has limited Zcash availability in some markets. Bit2Me and Binance Dubai have also withdrawn support.

The European Union presents a larger long-term hurdle. From July 10, 2027, the EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation will prevent crypto service providers from offering services involving anonymity-enhancing cryptocurrencies. The restrictions could further reduce access to regulated ZEC trading venues.

Despite these pressures, Zcash trading remains active. During September's rally, 24-hour ZEC volume exceeded $1.2 billion, while futures open interest surpassed $2 billion.

For miners, Zcash therefore represents a high-margin but concentrated opportunity. Operators may benefit while the favorable price-to-difficulty gap persists, but diversified mining capacity, flexible payout arrangements and multiple liquidity channels could become increasingly important as mining competition rises and regulated market access narrows.
