Are you considering investing in private medical care? Trying to weigh up whether it’s worth it or not? Then you’re in the right place. Here, we’ve listed some of the advantages and disadvantages of private healthcare to help you make the right decision for you.
Advantages
Faster access to treatment
Often, referral to a specialist for diagnosis is quicker when done privately than you may experience with NHS waiting times. The quicker you get to see a professional, the quicker you can access treatment and start the road to recovery.
Private rooms
If you need to spend any time in a private hospital, you may be provided your own private room and bathroom, and your partner or family member may be able to stay with you. Or, you may share with a limited number of others, depending on your cover and so on. This offers a relaxing and comfortable environment in which to rest.
Choice of hospital and healthcare professionals
It’s likely that you’ll be given a choice of healthcare professionals to work with. Once you’ve chosen who you’d like to see, you’ll consult with them throughout your treatment, rather than seeing multiple different doctors.
Disadvantages
The cost
Perhaps the most obvious disadvantage is the costs associated with private healthcare. Of course, this will vary depending on many factors, including your level of cover and whether you include other family members on your policy. The cost will also increase as you get older.
Some illnesses may not be covered
Certain illnesses may not be covered on private health insurance policies. This means that if you have one of these illnesses, you will be unable to make a claim through the insurer. Typically, private policies don’t cover chronic, long-term conditions such as CFS and diabetes.
You may have to travel for treatment
Often, private insurance policies will contain a list of approved healthcare professionals that you can use for diagnosis and treatment. If there isn’t a specialist or service in your area for your condition, you may have to travel further from your local area for treatment.
In the UK, we are incredibly lucky to have access to world-class healthcare via the NHS and private professionals. However, in the unlikely circumstance that you receive negligent treatment, you may be able to make a claim for compensation.
Whether you invest in private healthcare is very much up to you. You should carefully consider whether private healthcare is necessary for you needs and you can realistically afford it in line with your disposable income.
