‘Westworld Season 2 Expected to Begin Filming Summer 2017 for Release on 2018; Series Set to Explore How Hosts Work

‘Westworld’ season 2 is expected to begin filming sometime in summer 2017 ahead of the confirmed release for 2018. The series is set to explore more about hosts and how they work as teased by showrunner Jonathan Nolan.

According to Digital Spy, Ed Harris teased that filming for the second season of the science-fiction and Western thriller television series would begin in summer 2017, specifically sometime in June or July. The 66-year old Golden Globe award-winning actor may be returning to portray the Man in Black, one of the main characters in the series.

Harris revealed, "I was just talking to Jonah Nolan last night, who's a creator of this thing with his wife Lisa Joy, and yeah, they're doing another season… They're going to do 10 more episodes, and I will be involved."

HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys revealed during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the series will be returning to the small screens in 2018. He said, “Here's the good news: We've got Westworld coming back for 2018.”

Bloys also commented on the network’s “off-year” at the recent Golden Globe Awards saying, "On the one hand, I'm very proud of the 14 nominations… On the other hand, it's always more fun to win but we're proud of the shows. You win some, you lose some; you have to look forward at the things we have coming up. That's the way it goes sometimes; we had a good Emmys [but] had an off-year at the Golden Globes. It happens."

Meanwhile, showrunner Jonathan Nolan teased that the incoming season may shed some light on how the park’s Hosts work during a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said, “Their construction and their power source is something we’re really going to get into during season 2. So we’d like to keep that mysterious.”

Nolan continued, “They’re closer to biological than they are to mechanical, but they don’t suffer brain death the same way we do. They’re largely indistinguishable from a human beings, but their brains don’t require oxygen — which opens up interesting possibilities. Their brains are not as fragile as ours. On one hand, their cognition is controllable and malleable, but on a structural level they can’t be killed in the same way you and I can.”

He added, “There are advantages and disadvantages to being a host. Season 2 we’ll be exploring more the nuts and bolts of what they are— as the hosts themselves are trying to understand.”

‘Westworld’ season 2 is expected to air on HBO sometime in 2018.
