Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways have received final approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to operate an integrated alliance on flights between Doha and major Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. The authorization is valid for five years and is expected to enhance international travel options and competitive pricing on Middle East-Australia routes.
The ACCC had granted interim approval in November, allowing Virgin Australia to market and sell 28 weekly return flights. Following public consultation and a positive draft decision in February, the regulator now confirms the alliance brings clear public benefits.
According to ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey, the partnership will boost flight capacity between Australia and the Middle East, offering consumers more travel choices and potentially lowering airfares due to increased competition. Travelers will also benefit from enhanced connectivity and loyalty program rewards across both airlines.
The ACCC clarified that the authorization does not include any exclusivity arrangements between the two carriers, despite concerns raised by some stakeholders about potential restrictions on Virgin Australia forming future alliances with other airlines. The regulator concluded that any such risks were minimal compared to the overall public benefits.
The interim approval will remain effective until the final ruling is fully implemented, ensuring a seamless transition. This green light marks a significant step in strengthening air travel links between Australia and the Gulf region, enhancing both airline networks and customer experience.
