Unlocking Instant Settlement: MUFG Launches Blockchain Pilot for Japan’s ¥270 Trillion JGB Repo Market

Alongside Digital Asset and Progmat, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) has formally started a significant proof-of-concept (PoC) to bring repo dealings on-chain for Japanese government bonds. Conducted at four significant MUFG affiliates, the pilot tests real-time, 24/7 delivery-versus-payment (DvP) settlement using the institutional-grade Canton Network. Chosen as part of the Financial Services Agency's (FSA) "Payment Innovation Project," the project seeks to replace almost instant, automated intraday transactions in Japan's huge ~¥270 trillion ($1.8T) repo market with conventional T+1 settlement cycles.

Technologically, the project strikes a balance between regulatory stability and innovation. The JGBs will keep their legal classification as conventional book-entry transfer bonds instead of releasing all new tokenized securities. Rather, using tokenized deposits or stablecoins for the cash leg of the transaction, the Canton Network blockchain real time synchronizes account ledger changes. The PoC leverages smart contracts and Secured Finance's lending protocol to automate the entire repo lifecycle—including trade execution, collateral management, and margin clearing—without so much asset tokenization.

This pilot highlights a worldwide move toward on-chain collateral mobility, therefore bringing Japan in line with comparable intraday repo and tokenized settlement initiatives in the U.S., Europe, and Singapore. MUFG intends to collaborate with more general industry working groups toward commercial deployment between fiscal 2027 and 2029 if the PoC effectively clears legal, tax, and operational obstacles throughout late 2026. One of the most important sovereign bond markets in the world, a successful implementation may significantly lower counterparty risk, release stuck bank liquidity, and create a modern 24/7 financial infrastructure.
