U.S. President Donald Trump will campaign in Ohio on Saturday as Republicans fight to retain their narrow congressional majority, with the state’s closely contested U.S. Senate race emerging as a key midterm battleground.
Republican Senator Jon Husted is facing Democrat Sherrod Brown in one of eight Senate contests considered competitive. Husted is counting on Trump’s appearance to energize Republican voters who supported the president in 2024 but may be less likely to participate in a midterm election.
Trump won more than 55% of Ohio’s presidential vote in 2024, but economic pressures have since become a significant campaign issue. Gasoline prices in the state have climbed 35% over the past year to an average of $4.16 per gallon, according to AAA.
Trade tensions with Canada are also affecting Ohio. Canadian retaliatory tariffs imposed in response to Trump’s trade policies cover roughly $3 billion of Ohio exports based on 2025 figures, according to CBC.
The economic backdrop has created challenges for Republican incumbents nationwide as consumers continue to face elevated prices, including higher energy costs amid the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
Trump has promised to spend 32 days campaigning ahead of the midterm elections. His recent stops included Republican strongholds in north Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama.
The president has acknowledged the need to emphasize his administration’s economic record more effectively. “Everyone thinks that the prices are high because of me, but they’re not,” Trump told workers at a Texas truck plant on Thursday.
Ohio’s Senate campaign has also focused on data centers and social issues, including transgender medical procedures for minors. Outside groups have spent tens of millions of dollars on the Husted-Brown contest, making it the country’s second-most-expensive Senate race, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Husted campaign spokesperson Amy Natoce said the senator worked with Trump on tax cuts, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, and immigration policy.
Brown’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
