US under Trump Series: Is Trump alone in his Russia reconciliation?

The US President Donald Trump came under immense pressure from within his party, from the media and from American allies around the world for his idea of improving the relationship. He has repeatedly said that a better tie with Russia is in the interest of the United States and it is a good thing and asset if the Russian President Vladimir Putin likes him, not a liability. This approach towards foreign policies have earned him an array of accusations like his close relations with Russia, Russia helped him win the Presidency and many others. However, his latest press conference suggests that he has not given up on his ideas.

However, the recent comments from some his top people suggest that he might be finding himself alone in his Russian aspiration. Majority speaker of the House, Paul Ryan reiterated his deep skepticism on the possibility of a better relationship and said that the interest of the United States do not align with Russia and remains a hawk. However, he acknowledged that President Trump is different and the President sees a window of opportunity and he stands by the President's right in pursuing better relations with Russia. Speaking at the NATO (North-Atlantic Treaty Organization) Defense secretary James Mattis said, while it is up to the political leaders to find common grounds with Russia, the idea of military cooperation or joint actions are still far-fetched ideas. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President Mike Pence said that the Europe and the United States are the closest of allies and the US commitment towards Europe is unwavering. He added that the United States would hold the Russia accountable in Europe.

It is quite a mixed message coming out of Washington and there is a significant difference in communication from the President and the very next level.
