US presidential election series: Scorecard and explainer (Democrats)

Election in World's largest economy is a must watch, since it is likely to have years of implications with regard to policies, both economic and foreign.

In the US election process, people would be voting for their presidential candidate hopeful. Finally candidates from different parties, like Republicans, Democrats would get selected to fight for the top job.

Democrats' race isn't as crowded as the Republican ones.

Candidates fighting for final nominations -

  • Hilary Clinton - 68 year old Clinton, is wife of former President Bill Clinton and former secretary of state served under Obama administration from 2009 to 2013. If she wins final election, she will be first female president of United States.
     
  • Bernard Sanders - Better known as Bernie Sanders, oldest of all fighting the race. Mr. Sanders is of 74 years of age and senator of Vermont.

Nomination explainer -

To get the final nomination, Democratic candidate will have to secure 2383 delegates.  Selection process is similar to that of Republican, by state elections. Only difference is Democrats have delegates called Super Delegates, these people can choose whomever they wish to, without need to abide by popular vote. Former president Bill Clinton is a lifelong Super delegate.

This year 712 super delegates are there for the grab. So far Mrs. Clinton has secured support of 455 super delegates, compared to Bernie Sanders' 22. 235 are yet to decide their mind.

  • With Super Delegates, Mrs. Clinton is quite ahead in the race with 1001 delegates. She has so far secured 546 pledged delegates in 15 state elections.
     
  • Bernie Sanders have secured 349 pledged delegates and 371 in total.
