Pending home sales rose by a modest 0.2% m/m in October, against expectations of a more solid rebound following two consecutive declines. The outturn was below both (1.5%) consensus (1.0%) expectations.
The seasonally adjusted index rose to 107.7 (from 107.5) and was 3.9% higher than a year ago. Sales rebounded in two of the four regions, Northeast (+4.5%) and West (-1.7%), but continued to decline in the South (-1.7%) and Midwest (-1.0%) for the third month running.
Pending home sales have been trending modestly lower since the summer. With about 80% of pending home sales likely turning into existing home sales transactions in the next two months, we see today's data as suggesting some softness in home sales in Q4.
