U.S military and NATO to use blockchain technology for military apps

NATO and U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) have put requests for military related applications built on blockchain technology.

In the month of April, United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) said that it is seeking a company to assist it in developing a secure messaging app using distributed ledger technology for DoD. NATO has also put out requests for military-related apps built on decentralized digital ledger system - blockchain.

DARPA wants to influence blockchain technology to create a secure messaging and transaction platform that targets a messaging platform which is able to transfer messages via a secure decentralized protocol that will be secured across multiple channels. This includes transport protocol, encryption of messages via various application protocols and customized blockchain implementation of message deconstruction and reconstruction.

Talking to Fox News on this, Kevin Shahbazi, CEO of cloud-based security specialist LogMeOnce said that, “DARPA’s task is significant, and it will help the market overall.” He added saying, “This is a fantastic move, and will pave the road for many entrepreneurs to roll up sleeves and start contributing to this sector.”

On the other hand, NATO is looking for more traditional uses—using blockchains to make military logistics, procurement, and finance more efficient. NATO Communications and Information Agency is evaluating proposals submitted to the 2016 Innovation Challenge that included an Internet of Things (IoT) section, which seems appropriate for IoT-related applications of blockchain technology.

With interest and growing need for blockchain technology in military agencies and sector shows that the technology could bring more mainstream credibility.
