US destroyer collides with oil tanker off Singapore coast

In a second embarrassing event in two months, a United States’ guided missile destroyer collided with a huge oil tanker off the coast of Singapore that injured three sailors while ten are still reportedly missing.  The incident happened on early Monday in the east of Strait of Malacca. The accident is the second involving a naval destroyer from the US Seventh Fleet and a commercial vessel in just over two months. An international search effort, involving Singaporean naval, coast guard and commercial vessels, is under way after the incident occurred in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Singapore is home to world’s second busiest shipping port.

According to a statement from U.S. seventh fleet in Japan, the U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS John S McCain collided with oil tanker Alnic MC, at 5:24 local time when it was transiting to a routine port visit in Singapore. The destroyer sustained damage to her port side aft. The incident took place just months after another U.S. destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-registered container ship killing seven crew members. The incident also takes place just days after the United States’ navy ordered the removal of Fitzgerald’s Captain, executive officer, and senior enlisted leader of their positions for a loss of confidence in their ability to lead.
