US Election Series: Who would be Donald Trump’s running mate?

Historically speaking, the picking up of a running mate usually doesn’t make much of a difference for the race to the White House but this time around it is likely to be a deviation in the case of Donald Trump, who said in the past that he is looking for a candidate with political backgrounds as he has the business part largely covered. He even has put a deadline for the pickup, before the convention.

Why is it vital for Mr. Trump’s success?

One of the biggest issues for Trump is that despite his effort he hasn’t been able to unite the party that got deeply divided by Mr. Trump’s insults and anti-establishment comments during the primaries. Moreover, Conservative hardliners believe that Mr. Trump hasn’t shown yet that he is a true conservative. So, Mr. Trump is looking for a running mate, who can bridge these gaps.

Who are the favorites?

In recent days, Mr. Trump has narrowed his list and is expected to announce the running mate on Friday. Indian governor Mike Pence tops the list of the favorites. While this six-term member of House of Representatives would be an excellent choice due to his experience and popularity with the conservative, as a cons his controversial policy history makes Trump vulnerable in alienating the woman and LGBT community. Other names include Chris Christie, who has been supporting Trump in rough times and retired general Michael Flynn, who could give Trump an edge when he attacks Clinton over email scandal and her handling of Benghazi. Another top favorite in the list is former House Speaker Newt Gingrich can help Donald Trump with the conservative Republican party members and give his campaign a reformist look.
