It is now official that Hillary Clinton’s campaign will support the recount effort in key battleground states. On Saturday, in a post on Medium, Marc Elias, the Clinton team’s general counsel, said the campaign would take part in the Wisconsin recount being set off by Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, and would also participate if Ms. Stein made good on her plans to seek recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania. The deadlines to file petitions are today and Wednesday respectively.
Not many people excluding the wishful thinkers expect Hillary Clinton to turn around the outcome of the election as it would mean that she would have to win all three states. Currently, as of the latest count, Hillary Clinton has won 232 electoral votes, whereas Donald Trump has won 306. These three states, all of which were won by Trump offer 46 electoral votes. Donald Trump won Wisconsin by 25,257 more votes, won Pennsylvania by 70,010 votes more than Clinton, and won Michigan by 10,704 more votes. These large gaps are one of the reasons, why nobody thinks that Clinton could make it, especially in Pennsylvania. According to history, a recount has never closed gaps like these. Hillary Clinton would need about 55,000 votes to turn the election outcome in her favor.
The recountings are expected to begin later this week and earlier next week and the outcomes need to be declared before December 19th.
