Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reported significant progress in ongoing U.S.-Iran peace talks held in Switzerland, highlighting diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and Qatar. The negotiations, aimed at easing regional tensions and advancing a broader peace agreement, are expected to continue through additional high-level discussions.
In a statement on social media, Araghchi praised the mediation efforts of Pakistan and Qatar, saying they had helped achieve meaningful advances toward ending the conflict linked to Lebanon. He noted that restrictions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical exports had been eased, the U.S. naval blockade against Iran had been lifted, and a major reconstruction and economic development initiative for Iran had been launched.
Pakistan and Qatar also released a joint statement confirming that the first round of U.S.-Iran talks concluded with encouraging results. According to the mediators, both countries agreed to establish a high-level committee to oversee negotiations and work toward a comprehensive agreement within 60 days through technical and diplomatic discussions.
The two sides also approved the creation of a “de-confliction cell,” a mechanism designed to monitor and enforce a ceasefire involving Lebanon and prevent further escalation in the region.
The positive developments follow reports that Iran briefly suspended discussions after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of potential military action if Tehran failed to curb Hezbollah activities amid ongoing clashes with Israel in southern Lebanon.
Last week, Washington and Tehran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding intended to reduce hostilities and create a framework for a long-term peace deal. As part of the agreement, the United States lifted its naval blockade, while Iran allowed limited shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the diplomatic progress, Israel’s military operations in Lebanon remain a major obstacle. Tehran has insisted that Israel fully respect the ceasefire before further negotiations can advance, keeping regional stability and Middle East peace efforts at the center of ongoing talks.
