Detroit, MI, March 07, 2018 -- This Saturday, March 10, the men and women of the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources and buildOn Students from Western International High School will be working together in Southwest Detroit to address issues including the environment, homelessness and youth education. “We are proud to participate in buildOn’s community engagement partnership program for the third time with our UAW-GM Center for Human Resources employees,” said UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada. “The civic engagement track that we’ve helped buildOn pilot has been so important in teaching the Western International High School students that they have the creativity and power to change their community and make it better for everyone.”
The UAW-GM employees and buildOn students felt that it was vital to address the issues of environment, youth education and homelessness, so for their final project they will be hosting a community fair at Western International High School (1500 Scotten Road, Detroit, MI). At this event, they will provide hygiene kits and donated clothing for the homeless, as well as workshops on financial literacy, cyber safety and awareness, interpersonal relationships, how to build a miniature greenhouse, and “Trash Trivia”. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. until noon.
“The UAW and GM understand how coming together to work towards a common goal can result in positive changes for our community,” said Scott Sandefur, Vice President of GMNA Labor Relations. “These students are learning valuable skills that will benefit them for years to come.”
About buildOn: At home or abroad, buildOn's goal is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. Across the U.S., buildOn empowers urban youth to transform their neighborhoods through intensive community service -- working with senior citizens, the homeless, and younger children. These same students help build schools in some of the economically poorest countries in the world. Our students have contributed more than 2 million hours of service in the U.S., and have helped build over 1,267 schools in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Nicaragua, Nepal, Senegal, Malawi, and Mali.
