‘Twin Peaks Official Trailer Teases Long-Awaited Return of Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Cooper Ahead of May 2017 Premiere; Revival Described as “Pure Heroin”

‘Twin Peaks’ official trailer was recently released and teased the long-awaited return of Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Cooper ahead of the series’ May 2017 premiere on Showtime. The revival was also described as pure heroin by Showtime president David Nevins.

According to Variety, Showtime dropped the new official trailer for the upcoming series revival of the science-fiction drama that first premiered on ABC on April 1990. It follows an investigation into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the fictional Washington town. It became one of the top-rated shows of the ‘90s but a ratings decline caused the show to be cancelled.

However, the limited series was ordered by the network on October 2014 and is scheduled to be released on May 2017 with a two-hour premiere episode. It will feature the return of Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, an unconventional and quirky investigator heading the case of Laura’s death in the seemingly sleepy town. The series picks up 25 years following Laura’s murder.

The 30-second long clip, complete with the soundtrack by composer Angelo Badalamenti, didn’t contain any dialogue but transports viewers back to the eerily familiar Twin Peaks. Showtime hasn’t released much information about the series, but creator David Lynch confirmed that the events of prequel ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ would be of great importance to the revival’s storyline.

According to Polygon, Lynch teased, “I could say it’s the story of Laura Palmer’s last seven days… Very much important for this.” It was revealed that the revival will feature much of the original cast members in addition to new actors including Naomi Watts, Laura Dern, Tim Roth, Michael Cera, Monica Bellucci, and Josh McDermitt. Lynch himself reprise the role of detective Gordon Cole.

Showtime president David Nevins referred to the revival series as “the pure heroin version of David Lynch,” during an announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour. According to Entertainment Weekly, Nevins said, “The thing about Twin Peaks, and this new version of Twin Peaks, is it rewards close watching… It was an original social media discussion show before the tools of fan engagement really existed. That’s one reason why David is so particular about secrecy. It will really reward close watching and [piecing] things together over time.”

‘Twin Peaks’ is scheduled to air on May 21, 2017 on Showtime. The limited series is written by original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost and directed by Lynch.
