Turkey’s jobless rate rises to 10.2 pct in June

Turkey’s jobless rate rose in June from the previous month. The number of unemployed persons increased to 3.12 million, with 247,000 persons rising in the June period as compared with the same period in 2015. The jobless rate increased to 10.2 percent in June from May’s 9.4 percent. Non-agricultural jobless rate rose to 12.2 percent in the same period, whereas youth unemployment rose 19.4 percent.

Meanwhile, the total number of employed person increased by 390k to 27.6 million in June 2016, as compared with the same period last year. The employment rate occurred at 47.1 percent without any change, according to Turkish Statistical Institute.

The number of employment in agriculture dropped 421k, whereas the number of non-agricultural employment rose by 811k in this period. The distribution of employment sector wise showed that 20.2 percent were employed in agriculture, 19.3 percent in industry, 7.5 percent in construction and 53.1 percent in services.

Services employment rose 2.1 percentage points, whereas in construction employment increased by 0.2 percentage point. Employment in agriculture dropped 1.8 percentage points and in industry it fell 0.4 percentage point.

The number of persons in the labor force reached 30.78 million, an increase of 637k in the period of June 2016 from June 2015. Labor force participation rate rose by 0.3 percentage point to 52.4 percent in June.
