In contrast to what other social media platforms have done, Tumblr did not provide much fanfare for their announcement that it would be introducing ads on its site. These ads are meant to help bring in more money and could be an opportunity for users to earn cash using the platform, much like how YouTube stars are making millions creating videos.
According to the blog post by Tumblr about the development, absolutely anyone can become eligible for making money through the ads on their blogs. They can apply for the feature through what the site is calling its “Creatrs” program, and any musicians, artist, writer or “misfit weirdo memelord” as the post put it, is welcome to be part of the new industry.
The post reiterates that the bloggers are not required to put ads on their accounts if they are uncomfortable with the feature. They can just turn it off with a push of a button. More than that, the site has not worked out all the kinks in the system yet, so it’s a safe bet for users to not jump on the bandwagon just yet.
There are over 65 million users on Tumblr right now, and the site hosts over 306 million blogs, according to Tech Crunch. Once the update kicks in, all of those blogs from all of those users become eligible for monetization should they choose to be part of the program. The ads will be available on both web and mobile versions of the blogs, as well.
“This was a long time coming, and will be one of the biggest projects we’ve ever launched at Tumblr,” David Karp, the founder of Tumblr wrote on his blog. “It’s been a busy summer—a new GIF maker, live video, new messaging stuff—and there’s a whole lot more on the way. Next up: getting you paid for your work.”
