U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he secretly switched aircraft in Turkey last month on the advice of the U.S. Secret Service after an alleged Iranian assassination threat raised security concerns.

The unusual operation took place following the NATO summit in Ankara. According to reports, Trump was moved from Air Force One to a military aircraft through a catering truck in an effort to conceal his departure. The White House did not publicly reveal the aircraft change at the time.

The covert transfer remained undisclosed until The Washington Post reported it on Monday, citing people familiar with the operation. The revelation sparked questions over whether Trump's aides, journalists and other passengers aboard the aircraft believed to be carrying the president may have faced increased risks.

Trump said he believed the plane he ultimately boarded could have been more vulnerable because adversaries might have targeted the aircraft they expected him to use.

The president also emphasized that he followed instructions from the Secret Service and the military, saying he receives numerous threats and did not ask for extensive details about the specific warning.

The incident occurred after Trump traveled to Ankara aboard a newly renovated aircraft donated by Qatar. Although the jet was expected to be used for his return trip, Trump unexpectedly switched to an older Air Force One before leaving Turkey.

The decision raised additional questions about the security of the Qatar-donated aircraft, particularly because the NATO trip marked its first international journey. The aircraft has already attracted scrutiny over the speed and cost of its renovations.

The secret plane switch came as tensions between the United States and Iran were escalating, adding to concerns surrounding Trump's security during international travel. Turkey's proximity to Iran further heightened the sensitivity of the president's movements.

The episode has since generated widespread attention online, including memes portraying Trump as being transported inside a catering truck, while the White House has defended the security measures as part of standard presidential protection procedures.
