U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has recommended Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to serve as South Carolina’s interim U.S. senator, urging Governor Henry McMaster to appoint her to the vacant seat.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Darline Graham and described the recommendation as a fitting way to honor the longtime South Carolina lawmaker. The president said he believed her appointment would serve as a meaningful tribute to Lindsey Graham’s legacy and his years of public service.
"I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!" Trump wrote.
The recommendation places Darline Graham at the center of discussions over who could temporarily represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate following the vacancy left by Lindsey Graham’s passing. While the appointment authority rests with Governor McMaster, Trump’s endorsement could carry significant political influence among Republican leaders and voters in the state.
If selected, Darline Graham would serve on an interim basis until the process for choosing a permanent successor moves forward under South Carolina law. The governor has not yet announced whether he will follow the president’s recommendation or consider other candidates for the position.
Lindsey Graham was one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable senators and a close political ally of President Trump. His tenure in the Senate spanned decades, during which he played a prominent role in national security, judicial confirmations, and foreign policy debates.
Trump’s public backing of Darline Graham underscores his desire to honor the late senator while helping shape the future representation of South Carolina in Washington. The expected appointment decision by Governor Henry McMaster is likely to draw close attention from state and national political observers in the coming days.
