U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he plans to personally reach out to NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie following the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, a case that authorities now believe may involve an abduction. Speaking to reporters during a bill signing in the Oval Office, Trump described the situation as troubling and unusual, while expressing sympathy for the Guthrie family.
“I’m going to call her later on. I think it’s a terrible thing,” Trump said, noting that he has always had a good relationship with Savannah Guthrie. He added that the circumstances surrounding the disappearance raise serious concerns and emphasized that authorities are working to uncover what happened.
The case is currently being led by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. According to officials, Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home on Saturday night. Family members reported her missing on Sunday afternoon after being unable to reach her. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s department said investigators believe she may have been taken against her will, possibly during the middle of the night, escalating the urgency of the search.
Trump also voiced support for increasing the number of federal agents involved in the investigation, signaling potential federal assistance if requested by local authorities. The involvement of additional resources could help accelerate efforts to locate Nancy Guthrie and determine the circumstances of her disappearance.
Savannah Guthrie, a longtime co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show and one of the most recognizable faces in American morning television, has not publicly commented in detail on the case. However, NBC News reported that she will no longer host coverage of the opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics, suggesting she is stepping back from some professional commitments as the situation unfolds.
The disappearance has drawn national attention due to Guthrie’s high-profile role in broadcast journalism and the serious nature of the allegations. As investigators continue their work, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. The focus remains on locating Nancy Guthrie safely and providing answers to her family amid growing concern.
