U.S. President Donald Trump met with his top national security advisers on Monday to discuss the administration’s escalating pressure campaign on Venezuela, according to a senior U.S. official. The closed-door meeting in the Oval Office focused partly on concerns over drug trafficking, which Washington has repeatedly linked to the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. While the official provided few details, the discussion underscores the White House’s growing attention on Venezuela’s role in regional security.
Tensions spiked after Trump declared over the weekend that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered “closed in its entirety,” a statement that generated unease and confusion in Caracas. The president also confirmed that he had spoken directly with Maduro, whom the United States does not recognize as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. Trump declined to elaborate on the content of their conversation, keeping both policymakers and analysts guessing about the administration’s next steps.
The United States has accused Maduro of enabling large-scale drug shipments that ultimately contribute to American deaths, allegations the Venezuelan leader firmly rejects. As part of its broader strategy, the Trump administration has been weighing new measures targeting what it describes as Venezuela’s role in the illegal narcotics trade. This comes as U.S. military operations in the region ramp up, with troops carrying out at least 21 strikes against suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific since September, resulting in at least 83 fatalities.
The surge in U.S. military presence near Venezuela has fueled speculation about potential future actions. Reports of possible escalation have intensified as diplomatic relations continue to deteriorate. Although Washington maintains that its focus is counter-narcotics enforcement, the scale of deployed firepower has raised questions about the administration’s long-term intentions. As the situation evolves, both regional governments and international observers are closely monitoring the U.S. approach toward Venezuela and its potential implications for regional stability.
