ITHACA, N.Y., April 17, 2018 -- Early graft failure after CABG surgery, due to vessel defects, anastomotic technical errors, poor native run-off or competitive flow, is reported in up to 12 percent of grafts. This can result in reoperations and readmissions – undesirable outcomes for patients and hospitals. Transonic’s newest flowmeter, the 354C Optima, incorporates decades of expertise in flow measurement, waveform morphology and the development of flow assessment algorithms to simplify graft patency assessment during coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). A short 8-second snapshot of patient flow and pressure data will trigger an analysis of this data based on the company’s CABG flow assessment protocol, and report its findings.
Transonic believes that Interoperative flow measurement together with our CABG patency assessment protocol will improve outcomes, reduce the incidence of re-interventions and readmissions, and contribute to hospital quality goals. Transonic is so confident in the value of this measurement that it will collaborate with hospitals in pursuit of their strategic quality improvement initiatives to reduce preventable readmissions, that it will offer credit for future meter use should a patient be readmitted within 30 days.
Per Transonic’s CEO Cor Drost: “We introduced ultrasound transit-time flowmetry during the early days of beating heart CABG surgery, and developed flow-based graft patency algorithms together with our collaborator Dr. Bruce Mindich. These algorithms have withstood the test of time, and are now incorporated in our flowmeter in a manner where flow-based CABG patency assessment may become part of the routine armamentarium of all CABG surgeons.”
For over three decades, Transonic Systems, pioneer of transit-time ultrasound technology for volume flow measurement, has led the world in advancing meaningful measurements for biomedical applications. The Optima 354C takes this measurement know-how one step further to assist cardiac surgeons as they make surgical decisions.
