The synopsis and preview for “This Is Us” season 3’s third episode made it obvious that it is going to be focused on Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) upcoming medical procedure. But Mandy Moore also revealed that the episode, titled “Katie Girls,” will go back to Rebecca’s childhood.
Most of the flashback scenes in the first two seasons mostly covered the beginnings of the Pearson family. But it now looks like “This Is Us” season 3 will go farther into the timeline and uncover more details about the past of Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).
Seasons 1 and 2 featured some scenes with Rebecca’s mother. And in those moments, it was made clear that her mom was never her ideal role model in raising her three kids. “This Is Us” season 3 episode 3, it now appears, will discuss it further.
Moore told TVLine that “This Is Us” season 3’s “Katie Girls” will “delve a tiny bit into Rebecca’s childhood.” In an attempt to show the audience that, no matter how perfect Rebecca may seem, she also grew up in a “dysfunctional” family.
The snippets in the “This Is Us” season 3 preview also show there will be more flashbacks to the time Rebecca and Jack started dating. As already established, something happened during his tour of duty in Vietnam that changed Jack forever. Though he really liked to be with Rebecca, these events complicated the beginning of their relationship.
“There’s so much of it [Jack has] chosen not to share with [Rebecca] and his family that profoundly affected and changed him,” Moore said about the next “This Is Us” season 3 episode. “It’s a part of him that he doesn’t show to anybody else.”
Meanwhile, another important event in the third episode of “This Is Us” season 3 is Kate’s upcoming medical procedure. She and Toby (Chris Sullivan) decided to proceed with the IVF as they explore all possibilities to have a baby.
While undergoing the procedure, the preview for “This Is Us” season 3 episode 3 shows Kate in an encounter with her younger self. And her teenage persona is obviously not on board with her having a baby.
New episodes of “This Is Us” season 3 airs every Tuesday, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. “Katie Girls” will be released on Oct. 9.
