'The Walking Dead' Season 9: Here Are the Reasons Why Rick and Maggie Will Not Be Returning

“The Walking Dead” Season 9 is poised to create a lot of disparity between the show and the comic it is based upon. While the post-apocalyptic drama has long broken away from its originals source, showrunners are still trying to incorporate some aspects of it into the series.

The differences that “The Walking Dead” Season 9 will herald include the departure of two major characters: Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln). In the comics, both of these characters are still alive and playing integral roles in helping their motley crew survive outside threats, Comic Book reported.

But “The Walking Dead” Season 9 is going to remove both Maggie and Rick to the disappointment and frustration of fans around the world. The reason why Cohan isn’t coming back is because her contract with AMC expired and negotiations for her re-signing went awry. The actress instead opted to sign an agreement with ABC as she’s been cast to headline the network’s new series, “Whiskey Cavalier,” a spy/drama comedy.

As for Lincoln, his departure from “The Walking Dead” Season 9 is mainly because of family concerns. Lincoln’s co-star Chandler Riggs, who plays Rick’s son Carl, previously said that the actor has to leave his family behind and film the series for seven months at a time. And the fact that Lincoln had to do this for nine years apparently took a toll on the show’s lead star.

Both Cohan and Lincoln will not be returning to the show as fans are still hoping that this is but the writers’ way of blindsiding audiences into thinking their characters are gone for good. In this case, that is exactly what’s going to happen. It’s still unclear how showrunners will remove Rick and Maggie, perhaps by having them die in some way or sacrificing themselves in order to save the group.

Whatever path the writers choose, it’s almost certain that both actors will permanently part ways with the show. “The Walking Dead” Season 9 is scheduled to air on Oct. 7 and the plot will time jump two years from where it previously left off.
