‘The OA Season 2: Creators Hint at Netflix Sci-Fi Series Fate; Brit Marling Addresses ‘Stranger Things Comparison

‘The OA’ season 2 is yet to be renewed on Netflix but creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij continued to hint at the science-fiction drama web television series’ fate during recent interviews. Marling also addressed the ‘Stranger Things’ comparison made by numerous critics.

Netflix’s mysterious new science-fiction drama starring Marling as main protagonist Prairie Johnson dropped all eight episodes last December 16, 2016. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether the show will return for season 2 despite the finale’s cliffhanger.

During an interview with Esquire, Marling and Batmanglij expressed their enthusiasm over a possible renewal on Netflix. When asked if they were willing to do future seasons, Marling replied, “Oh yeah, we'd of course love to keep telling the story, and we've spent some time thinking about the mathematics of where it would go.”

Batmanglij explained, “We planned out a larger story when we started, because we didn't want to go into it without having the larger picture planned out---I think the audience can always tell that, or feel it. But we also wanted it to be its own standalone piece.”

He added, “So again, I think the novel analogy works really well, it's a novel, but it could easily be a series of novels. And I think it would be best as a series of novels!”

Since its debut, the series received generally favorable reviews from fans and critics alike but some critics likened it to another Netflix science-fiction series, ‘Stranger Things.’  Marling addressed the comparison saying, “I think the biggest comparison is that Netflix is a place where a lot of young filmmakers are getting to tell robust, different kinds of stories—people who maybe began in features are finding an amazing harbor and home there, in terms of making original, long format stories.”

Marling and Batmanglij were also asked about season 2 during a separate interview with Variety. Marling admitted that leaving the ending open and as well as leaving questions unanswered was exciting enough. Batmanglij assured that whether they get commissioned for more seasons or not, the series was designed as a thought-provoking mystery and that it was up to the viewers to solve the series’ riddles.

‘The OA’ is a mystery drama web television series starring Brit Marling, Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith, Alice Krige, Patrick Gibson and Brendan Meyer. It is currently streaming on Netflix and consists of eight episodes, all directed by Zal Batmanglij and produced by Plan B Entertainment and Anonymous Content.
