The Great Debate: Who Is Craig Wright?

“I’m a bit of everything… I—try and stay—I keep my head down. Um…”, said Craig Wright, the person who is allegedly the Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, at Bitcoin Investor’s Conference via Skype.

But who is he really?

While the email exchanges and other documents provided by Gizmodo and Wired point towards Wright as The Creator, the authenticity of these emails remains unclear.

Following the day when the news broke, Wright’s blog was taken down, and his Twitter and Google+ accounts have been deleted.

The Guardian reported that Wright’s LinkedIn profile says that he is an Australian IT and security consultant. He describes himself as a “senior management executive information security specialist”. He claims to have a number of connections with Australian government institutions, and says he has been involved in cyber security and defence.

Until recently Wright was the director of over a dozen companies, The Guardian pointed out. Quite strangely in July this yeat, in the space of a week, he ceased his position as director from Cloudcroft Pty Ltd, Coin-Exch Pty Ltd, Daso Pty Ltd, Demorgan Holdings Pty Ltd, Demorgan Ltd, Denariuz, Ezas Pty Ltd, Integyrz Pty Ltd, Misfit Games Pty Ltd, Interconnected Research Pty Ltd, Zuhl Pty Ltd and Pholus Pty Ltd.

He remains a director of just 3 companies: Hotwire Preemptive Intelligence Pty Ltd and Panopticrypt Pty Ltd and Hotwire PE Employee Share Plan Pty Ltd.

As to where he is right now, it is difficult to say. Wright’s landlord told The Guardian that Wright and his Wife are planning to move to London.

The bitcoin community seems to be taking the news with a pinch of salt. A Reddit user going by the name BobAlison wrote:

“Count me skeptical, though. This guy seems to be trying way too hard to make it look like he's Satoshi. Leaked documents to reporters. Edited blog posts - with more suggestive evidence added after the fact. It seems like the work of a conman to be blunt.”

Yet another Reddit user mrchaddavis posted, “Satoshi is human and certainly part of him wants to take credit, but this just smells wrong. The bragging and importance this guy seems to attribute to himself doesn't seem like someone who could keep silent for 6 years about such a creation.

Seems more like a guy that wants to get a boat load of funding for his projects because everyone thinks he is Satoshi. It is a brilliant hoax, he can deny it the whole time and many will just believe it all the more.”

The list of people considering this latest development as a hoax is endless.
