‘The Crown’ Season 2 Possibly Filming in Gloucestershire With Claire Foy, Matt Smith; Netflix Boss Optimistic for More Seasons Chronicling Queen Elizabeth’s Life in 6 Decades

‘The Crown’ season 2 is reportedly filming in Gloucestershire. Lead stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith are expected to return as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, respectively. Meanwhile, Netflix’s Netflix’ Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos expressed his confidence in more seasons that will chronicle the queen’s life in a span of 6 decades.

According to Gloucestershire Live, the second season of Netflix’s biographical drama series based on the early years of reign of Queen Elizabeth II may possibly be filming in Gloucestershire in South West England. It reported that landmark locations in the county are currently packed with cast and crew of ‘The Crown.’ Filming has already taken place in Trafalgar Square in Central London.

A local resident revealed, “I've just been for a walk through Woodchester Park and there is a lot of activity going on because they are filming the next season of The Crown… I noticed that at the top lake there was some old-fashioned rowing boats and a diving crew suggesting that they are about to be filming there today, with actors.”

He continued, “I saw a couple of Range Rovers with blacked out windows arriving at 10am, so I guess that's the actors arriving."

The American-British television series was created by Peter Morgan and produced by Left Bank Productions for Netflix. Season 1 comprised of 10 episodes and was released in November 4, 2016. Reception for the series was generally positive with praises for performances, direction, writing, and cinematography among others.

It stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary, Jeremy Northam as Anthony Eden, Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother Queen Elizabeth, Ben Miles as Peter Townsend, Jared Harris as King George VI, Greg Wise as Lord Louis Mountbatten, Stephen Dillane as Graham Sutherland, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

The series traces Queen Elizabeth II’s life from her wedding day to the present day. Netflix’ Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos revealed that he was confident with pushing the series for more seasons. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sarandos said, "We're in production now on the second season… This is going to take Queen Elizabeth from age 29 to, presumably, the current day.”

He continued, “We'll see it lay out over decades. We've seen a lot of things about Queen Elizabeth, but we've already learned more about her than we ever had by watching the first ten hours."

It was reported that Netflix spent $100 million for the first two seasons alone, making it one of television’s most expensive show’s ever created. Sarandos said, "It's a crazy idea to come in with a 60-hour pitch… The idea is to do this over six decades, in six seasons presumably, and make the whole show over eight to 10 years."

‘The Crown’ has been renewed for season 2. The series is expected to return to Netflix by 2017.
